When is the best time to install summer tires?
The snow is melting, and road conditions are improving, which means that spring is just around the corner! Does that mean it’s finally time to swap your winter tires for summer tires? Here are a few expert tips to help you stay safe on the road.
According to the law
In Quebec, the Highway Safety Code requires motorists to use compliant winter tires from December 1st to March 15th. After that date, it is theoretically possible to install your summer tires. However, it’s a risky gamble – Winter can be unpredictable! Sudden snowfalls and late frosts can quickly turn roads into skating rinks, sometimes lasting until mid-April or even later. Remember that summer tires lose much of their grip in these conditions, which can seriously compromise your safety.
According to the “rule of 7s”
Here’s a foolproof tip for knowing when to change your tires: when the outside temperature stays at or above 7 C for 7 consecutive days, conditions are ideal for installing summer tires. Take advantage of this time to make an appointment with your mechanic.
Avoid waiting too long
It may seem more economical and easier to avoid peak periods at repair shops, or even to keep your winter tires on all year. Despite these good intentions, this practice isn’t recommended. Winter tires are made from a special rubber compound designed to stay flexible and maintain grip in sub-zero temperatures. However, this material degrades very quickly when exposed to heat. In other words, your winter tires could “melt” under the summer sun.
Additionally, winter tires create more rolling resistance on the road, which means higher fuel consumption. In short, it’s in your best interest to plan your tire change before the summer season begins.
