Freezing weather: 3 tips for driving comfortably without letting your engine idle

When temperatures dip, many drivers of gas-powered vehicles choose to let their cars warm up, often using a remote starter. However, letting your engine idle for several minutes before driving is a habit that can significantly increase greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Want to reduce your carbon footprint? Here are a few eco-friendly alternatives for staying warm behind the wheel.

1.    Use an engine block heater

An engine block heater helps keep your car’s antifreeze and engine oil at an optimal temperature. This makes starting your car in freezing conditions (-15 C or below) much easier and warms up the cabin much faster than a cold start. It’s generally recommended to plug in the block heater for about four hours before you plan to hit the road. Ask your mechanic which engine block heater is best suited for your vehicle.

2.    Invest in heated accessories

Does your vehicle lack a heated steering wheel or seats? Heated covers for your steering wheel and seats can make all the difference on very cold days. These affordable accessories plug directly into your car’s power outlet. Why go without them?

3.    Dress appropriately for the cold

You can avoid shivering when getting into your vehicle by dressing appropriately and covering your extremities. Warm socks and boots are a must, and gloves are essential, too—just make sure they don’t interfere with steering. You should also cover your head and ears. For safety, avoid wearing an overly bulky winter jacket, as it can create space between your body and the seat belt, reducing its effectiveness in a collision.

Finally, for maximum comfort and reliability, have your vehicle’s heating system inspected and serviced at your nearest M 360 Mechanic.
