Tips for driving safely near snowplows
When snow starts to fly, snowplows set out to clear the roads. They remove snow and ice so vehicles can easily get to where they need to go. If you come across a snowplow, grader or wheel loader on your drive, follow these tips to avoid getting into an accident.
- Maintain a safe following distance. Large snow removal vehicles have several blind spots that can make it difficult for them to see you. Make sure you stay in their field of vision.
- Avoid passing on the right. Snow, ice, rocks and other debris can get thrown up by passing snowplows. This can be dangerous for you and other road users.
- Only pass on the left when it’s safe to do so. Make sure you have enough space to get by and that you don’t cut off the snow removal vehicle when returning to your lane.
- If you don’t have to pass, be patient and simply wait. After all, you have no way of knowing what the road conditions are like ahead.
During winter, many parts of your vehicle like your windshield wipers, tires and brakes are critical to your safety. Visit your nearest M 360 Mechanic shop for an inspection.
