What are the dangers of summer driving?

Do you know what it means when the weather is great and there are plenty of opportunities to escape from it all? It’s holiday time! Even though the roads are usually in better condition in summer than in winter, the two months with the highest number of fatal accidents in Canada are July and August. Why? Here are some of the main dangers of summer driving and tips on how to stay safe.

Speeding

Many drivers are tempted to speed when the weather is good and the roads are clear. However, excessive speed is a factor in two out of three fatal collisions. Remember to be light-footed!

Crowded roads

In summer, all kinds of vehicles are on the road, including recreational vehicles, motorbikes and bicycles. Therefore, be extra vigilant and check your blind spots while keeping a safe distance from other road users.

Rain

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are typical in summer water accumulates quickly on the pavement and visibility can be significantly reduced. Consequently, it’s best to avoid driving through puddles whenever possible (without endangering the safety of other road users) to prevent aquaplaning and losing control.

Switch off cruise control when driving in rainy weather because the system might mistake a spinning wheel in a puddle for a loss of speed, which can cause the car to accelerate unexpectedly. You should also brake sooner and more slowly to avoid skidding.

Sun

Sunny days are great when lounging on the beach, but not necessarily when you’re behind the wheel! When the sun is lower on the horizon (in the morning or late afternoon), the rays hit your windshield directly, which can temporarily blind you. What should you do if you’re suddenly blinded? First, slow down. Then, make sure you can be seen by other motorists (who may also be blinded) by turning on your low-beam headlights and taillights.

The risks of summer driving are very real. Fortunately, you can reduce them by following these safety rules. Remember that caution is essential in winter and summer!
