Did you know car windows have built-in safety features?
Over the years, the automotive industry has developed various systems and accessories to enhance driver safety, including alarms, automatic emergency braking, and advanced locking mechanisms. However, you might not be aware that some safety features are integrated directly into your vehicle’s windows. The experts at M 360 Mechanic highlight several of these innovative features in this blog post.
Head-up display (HUD)
A head-up display, sometimes referred to as a head-up guidance system, projects crucial driving information, such as speed and navigation, directly onto the windshield above the steering wheel. This feature allows the driver to monitor their surroundings and track their essential driving information without taking their eyes off the road.
Treated glass
Automotive glass typically undergoes two main types of treatments: tempering and laminating. Tempered glass is commonly used for side and rear windows. The tempering process involves heating the glass to a very high temperature, which significantly enhances its impact resistance. If the glass breaks, it shatters into smaller, less sharp pieces than regular glass does, reducing the risk of injury.
Laminated glass, commonly used for windshields, consists of two layers of glass with a vinyl film sandwiched between them. This film holds the layers together during an impact and resists twisting, helping to prevent the roof from caving in during a rollover.
Safety film
Similar to laminated glass, a safety film coating helps keep glass shards contained in the event of an impact. It also makes the glass much harder to puncture and more difficult for thieves to break.
This highly resistant film reduces the risk of occupants being ejected from the vehicle, either partially or completely, during a collision. It also helps prevent road debris from entering the passenger compartment, further safeguarding everyone inside.
